Throughout the past century, Onondaga Lake, the body of water Syracuse sits on, has been the home to industrial contamination and pollution. This pollution created an unavoidable negative relationship between it and the people of Syracuse. Fishing and swimming in the lake were banned, and local ecosystems were put at risk. This intervention aims to bring the people of Syracuse back to their lake and to rekindle their relationship with the natural environment that their city sits on. This intervention takes the form of a community center, wherein people can learn about the lake’s history, do personal work/research, walk around an open park, grab a bite to eat, and appreciate the beauty of Onondaga Lake. Due to revitalization efforts, the lake is the cleanest in over 100 years. However, many individuals still feel the fear of the past and worry about the safety of interacting with the lake’s water. For that reason, this community center also includes a pool that takes water from the lake, filters it, and then reintroduces it back into the ecosystem. The addition of the pool gives people a safe place to swim along the edge of the lake while reintroducing cleaner water into the environment.
